RECREATION TRAINING WORKSHOP

29 08 2011

JUDSON BAPTIST CHURCH

4900 Franklin Rd., Nashville, TN   37220

(615) 833-6600  ext. 306)

Friday, October 28th

5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Open to anyone wanting to minister, serve, lead, but dreads the thought of planning recreation or activities for the children or youth. This will be a fun night of learning hands on how to use recreation as a ministry tool.

If you’ve ever been afraid to volunteer in ministry because you don’t know what to do with youth or children this workshop will equip you with all you need to know and build your confidence in volunteering. Whether you are teaching a Bible Study, doing arts/crafts this workshop takes recreation activities from the classroom to the gym to outside. From low energy level activities to high energy, from no equipment to unusual equipment you’ll have a bag of tricks to help you in your ministry as a layperson to being on staff.

Topics:

  • The Groups You Work With
  • The Environment Around You
  • Judson Policies
  • Equipment Availability
  • Learning Styles
  • Planning

Who is this for?  Anyone working with children or youth or  wanting to work with children or youth. Anyone  wanting to go on a mission trip. This is for adults as well as teenagers who would be leading any groups of children.

What is this?   It is time to equip God’s people to be prepared and ready and able to use Recreation as a tool to reach and teach children and youth the Gospel. It is a recreation training workshop for those of you already in the classroom to those of you with no classroom or position at all. You will learn activities from quiet thinking  to high energy loud and noisy recreation. This workshop will teach you how to introduce the game, how to facilitate, how long to play it, how to bring reflection and spiritual application into the game.  Some of you lead Bible Study but you can still use recreation as a tool to drive home a life application of the scripture. Some of you are helpers and end up needing to kill 15 minutes with a room full of children. Use recreation a way to keep the group interested and engaged in the scripture you are involved with.

What will participants who attend get?  An outline of introducing games to policies to how each group dynamics are made up so vastly different  to the challenge, the rules, the reflection and spiritual application. You will receive 113 games broken down into categories such as Circle Games, Cooperative Games, Dramatic Games, High Activity Games, Large Group Games, Name Games, Nature Games, Parachute Games, Quick & Easy Games, Rainy Day or Indoor Games, Sports Oriented Games, Tag Games, & Water Games. There will be a goody bag for the Recreation Leaders that you will find handy in your leading recreation such as whistle, clipboard, and other useable items. From this workshop you’ll gain confidence in : communicating effectively, building trust, handling conflict/resolution as a Christian, having fun while teaching your group to have fun.

Judson Journey Fitness Challenge

14 03 2011

LET’S GET STARTED JUDSON! Here’s the challenge to change the physical condition of Judson Baptist…

Beginning April 1st – July 29 for 17 weeks let’s see how much walking Judson can do…Sign Up for Free and if you want you can pick up a pedometer  for $3 and start recording…go to www.steptracker.com sign up and  record your progress. The early morning bootcampers and church staff are challenging you. We will take their accumulative steps of both bootcamps and church staff against the highest number of steps of the same number of people of Judson.

Between 2000-2500 steps = 1 mile.

10,000 or more = 5 miles

HERE’S WHAT STEPTRACKER WILL DO FOR YOU FOR FREE:

  • Keep track of your daily steps, miles, diet etc with Tracks — databases that combine columns of, numbers, words, paragraphs and yes/no’s.
  • If you ever forget to update — and you will — you can have the Friendly Steptracker Remindbot send a link through email or RSS politely reminding you.
  • And — if you want — you can share your progress with friends, family, coworkers, bloggers — whoever! Especially share your progress with me, Jenny Hemmer so I can post everyone’s progress to keep the real Judson contenders and competition motivated and alive. PRIZES AND AWARDS FOR THE TOP WINNERS! If you keep your progression log private you can still print out your walking progress to turn into me so that I can still record your activity.
  • AGE GROUP BREAKDOWNS: 12 yrs. & below             13 yrs. - 21 yrs.

    22 yrs.-35 yrs.    36 yrs.-50 yrs.        51 yrs. – 65 yrs. 66 yrs. & Up

Walk together with your friends, get a walking group going, invite friends and family to join, walk on your lunch breaks, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Just get started walking…and if you already are…your challenge is to get someone who’s not walking out there with you.

Pick up your pedometer at the Recreation Kiosk on Sunday, call Jenny Hemmer at (615) 833-6600 (ext. 306), or email at jenny.hemmer@judsonbaptist.com . Limited number of pedometers available so don’t delay.

    • Spend a week wearing the pedometer all day and recording the daily step counts to get a sense of how many steps you generally walk in a day. Don’t do anything special this first week. Just wear the pedometer and record the daily counts so that you know what your baseline is
    • Look for ways to increase your daily step counts. Park further from the doors when you go shopping. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Remember that a few extra steps throughout the day will add up
    • Start walking for exercise. Begin slowly if you have been fairly sedentary. A daily walk down the block and back may be enough at first. When weather is inclement, shopping malls are good locations for indoor walking.
    • Continue to keep a record of your daily step counts. Gradually increase your counts by extending your daily exercise walk. The amount you increase and the goals you set will be entirely determined by how you feel. There is no one formula for everyone.
